Great buy, i would suggest to anyone needing to ...
Wife was complaining that her old laptop(Windows 7 Starter) was slow so i took a gamble on this Chromebook and she loves it. Her only complaint was the solid white color. But i was able to find a snap-on hard case in the color she wanted. Great buy, i would suggest to anyone needing to check email/online shopping..Found one weird issue with the keyboard. Its like a standard QWERTY board but there is no caps lock

I've been in the market for a Chromebook since last summer. I have previously purchased two other chromebooks (an Asus and a Samsung) as gifts for family members but my standards for my own were higher. My `musts' were a display larger than the standard 11.6 inches, full HD resolution, 802.11ac wifi, fanless design, superior battery life and decent performance. This Acer model not only gives me all of that, but at a price of $199 with one terabyte of cloud storage free for two years the value was unbeatable!

So far It's met all of my expectations and more. The build quality is superb. It has a much more solid feel than other chromebooks and Windows netbooks in its class that I've used. The keyboard is high quality and easy to type on. The trackpad is responsive. It is also very thin when closed and fits easily into a briefcase. The white plastic does not show fingerprints like the many glossy black laptops I've used.

Performance. Relative to my now semi-retired Windows laptop it's nothing short of amazing. It boots in seconds instead of minutes. No lags for virus scans or Google Drive syncing. No regular lengthy Windows updates. Web pages open instantly and scroll smoothly even with many tabs open. No need to run regular disk optimization and performance tuning or reboot frequently to restore its lost mojo. As a moderate to heavy computer user this thing has already had a huge positive impact on my productivity.

The display. I was concerned due to some of the negative reviews but found it to be a non-issue. Straight out of the box I admit that I was unimpressed, but with a little adjusting of settings I achieved a very high quality display for what I use it for. Like all chromebooks the text is tiny and almost impossible to read on a smaller full HD display (same problem on a Toshiba I tried at the store). Hopefully a future update of Chrome OS will address this. But with a little experimentation the issue can be largely overcome. Here are some of the options:

    * under settings->web content set font size to "very large"
    * manually zoom web pages by holding ctrl and pressing + or - (or you can also set a default zoom level for all web pages)
    * change screen resolution by holding ctrl and shift and pressing + or -
    * change screen brightness using the dedicated function keys on the keyboard

If you are like me you will be able to achieve an excellent viewing experience using some combination of the above. I also like the anti-glare coating because I often work out on the patio in the summer and this will be much more readable in sunlight. I will say though that I don't use it for playing videos with multiple people watching so haven't run into the limited viewing angle problem that some have mentioned.

When I have extensive work to do at my desk I use it with a 24" HD LED monitor and external wireless keyboard and mouse. As you might expect there is no issue whatsoever with text readability on the larger screen. I also was very pleasantly surprised to find that when I plug in to the external monitor the Chromebook automatically adjusts the output to the monitor's full resolution no matter what the current display setting is, and when I close the lid with the monitor connected it doesn't go to sleep. I've also used it with a bluetooth mouse on the road and it is fairly responsive but occasionally stalls or has to to be reconnected. It's an older Dell BT mouse so I'm guessing it would probably work better with a newer model.

The built-in webcam works great. I've used it for Google Hangouts video calls. If you haven't yet tried Google's Skype alternative I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality and ease of use. If your friends don't yet have hangouts it takes just seconds to set up if they have a gmail account. The audio sound quality from the bottom-facing stereo speakers is also surprisingly good and there is plenty of volume.

Battery life really is excellent, as others have pointed out. I haven't tried to time it but it easily goes 2-3 days between recharges for my use versus my windows laptop which needs to be plugged in every couple of hours. I will rarely need to pack a charger except for extended trips. It also recharges very quickly with the included 2.5A charger.

As for peripherals I've so far used it with USB flash drives, an android smartphone, a digital camera, wireless keyboard and mouse and webcam. The only problem I encountered is with the webcam. The camera works fine but the chromebook doesn't seem to recognize the USB microphone built into it. As I mentioned it also works great with an external monitor on the HDMI port and bluetooth peripherals. My older non-cloud-ready printer works fine with Google Cloud Print but I can't access the scanner function directly from the Chromebook with it. I'll probably just get a new cloud-ready printer since they cost little more than a set of ink cartridges these days, especially if you find one on sale.

The supposed compatibility issues between Chrome OS and the new Nvidia Tegra processor are way overblown in my opinion. Of the thirty to forty apps I've installed so far only one has had a problem, and that disappeared when I switched to the beta release channel of Chrome. Apparently Chrome developers are already ironing out any glitches with this new platform. The performance also seems a bit snappier on the newer releases but I haven't really confirmed that with any benchmarks so it may just be my imagination. Since things improved with the beta channel I'm now running on the developer's channel and haven't noticed any problems so far. I will update this review if I run into any.

Chrome OS. When I hear some people say that Chromebooks are only good for surfing the web and not a Windows PC replacement I think that they don't really understand or haven't yet embraced the emerging cloud computing paradigm, for which Chromebooks are far better suited than Windows machines. I began my conversion long ago. It involved putting all of my files, photos and music in the cloud where they can be accessed from literally any PC, Chromebook, smartphone or tablet, anywhere. No worries about hard drive crashes or backups EVER again.

I've used Google Drive for well over a year with my Windows laptops but they aren't really optimized for cloud drives. They make a copy of the entire cloud drive on the local hard drive and run a program continuously in the background that keeps them in sync. Syncing is maddeningly slow and when you have multiple PCs they occasionally lose sync leaving you with an hours long headache to correct. On a Chromebook the cloud replaces the hard drive and eliminates even the need for one. A smaller, faster SSD provides all of the local storage needed and more.

But what about applications you say? This is the part that requires some changes in behavior and how you do things. For the standard office productivity applications just switch to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides from the Microsoft Office counterparts. They're free and compatible. I can open a Word document in Docs, edit it and resave it as a Word document if necessary. But I mostly just use Google Docs these days. You can also run the Microsoft Office online version and it's even free as of a few weeks ago.

Other applications have been or are being ported to online versions as well. Instead of a onetime purchase price and loading it up on your hard drive you generally pay a monthly subscription fee and can use it online anywhere and from from ANY device. Quickbooks is online. Turbotax as well. A Photoshop online version is currently in beta test. Everything Google is, of course, accessible online. I've recently found online replacements for Visio and MS Project (although not by Microsoft). Also some Android and Arduino software development tools. Windows Media Centers have already been replaced by Chromecasts along with smartphones and tablets. There is almost nothing I still need my Windows PC for. Until I eliminate those last few things I keep it plugged in and access it (rarely) using Chrome Remote Desktop from the Chromebook (which also works surprisingly well I must add).

That concludes my review other than to summarize by saying I am very happy with this product and highly recommend it - either as an all-out Windows laptop replacement or for light web surfing, depending on your current relationship with cloud computing.

Not as impressed as I thought I would be.

Taking it out of the box was exciting. The chromebook looked sleek and was light. Turning it on was fast and easy.

Bad: )But once the screen lit up to its home page I immediately started to regret my decision. The screen was dim and not near the quality of my galaxy s6 phone or my ipad mini.

Good: The acer chromebook was fast.

Bad: It was not personalizable at all. You can hardly change any settings to make it fit what you want it to do.

Bad: Doesnt really have any Apps. I was under the impression that it would be similar to an ipad, or a samsung tablet, but without the touchscreen. But in reality it can't download any apps. When you download anything from the Google play store all it does is download a link to a website. So for example, if you download a game, and then you click click on the "app" it doesn't really open the app it just opens up a new tab on your Web browser with a game in it. So you can't play games or do most things without being in range of wifi.

Bad: google docs. I read that you can use Google docs even when offline and it will still work. This is true but it had problems. When I did this for the first time I tried to save my document. First off there is no save button on Google docs so it doesn't give me the comfort that I'm use to having when I know my work has been saved on any other computer. It is suppose to automatically save for you every few seconds or so. Well I exited a document when I was writing offline and then went to check to make sure it was there in my folders and I couldn't find it! I typed up a second test document, watched the saved words appear, meaning it was automatically saved, and exited and tried to open that one. Once again I couldn't find it. A few hours later I went back and looked in my folders and there in plain sight were the docs I had saved. So they eventually showed up. But I lost a lot of trust. I can't be typing up 20 page research papers, for college this next semester, and not be able to find the documents I saved.

The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars, and not 2, is because it is fast and cheap. If all you want to do is watch youtibe and listen to Pandora than this is for you. But .osteoporosis people can do that on their phones or tablets anyways.

I'm returning my chromebook and I'm going to look into Microsofts cheap laptops instead, they run Windows and seem like a better option for me.

Beautifully designed laptop for which I can't think of a single limiting flaw. It's fast, light, battery that goes goes well beyond 11 hours and rear (out of the way) HDMI output. I'm very satisfied and recommend it to anyone looking for a mid-range Chromebook.
