- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2013When the Ceton arrived, I connected it to my network without a cablecard and used the Ceton Diagnostic software (available on their site) to download and install the latest BETA firmware and drivers.
Why the beta firmware and drivers? Because the beta firmware and drivers are required for the tuner pooling feature. Tuner pooling allows other computers on the network running Media Center to auto-select and use any available tuner among the six tuners the Ceton InfiniTV 6 provides. Without tuner pooling, tuners need to be specifically assigned to various computers; an inflexible and less than ideal setup.
The instructions said to install and activate the cablecard before connecting the tuning adapter, but in my case, the cablecard would not activate without first connecting the tuning adapter with the supplied usb cable. Once Oceanic Time Warner Cable successfully activated the cablecard, the Ceton Diagnostic software verified the activation and its ability to lock in channels. Despite all the green check marks, Media Center kept displaying a message indicating the selected channel was unavailable for every channel I switched to. I had to reboot the Ceton device and reconfigure Media Center before we were watching tv. The entire process took about an hour, partly because after first inserting the cablecard, it began downloading firmware and that took about 15 minutes.
Probably the most frustrating thing was the tech's lack of experience with cablecard and tuning adapter installations. At first, she kept saying "So you don't need a tuning adapter!" She also kept saying "I think the usb cable is supposed to connect to your computer." I think she thought the Ceton device was a tuning adapter. I had to repeatedly tell her that I did, in fact, need it and what its purpose is. She looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language when I explained about Switched Digital Video. And she basically ignored my suggestions as she spoke to other techs on her cell phone asking them for help. In the end, I sent her on her way even before I got Media Center to display tv channels. Once I knew the Diagnostic software saw the cablecard and verified it had been activated and that it was finding channels, I knew I'd be able to get the rest to work and that there really wasn't anything for her to do at that point. Ten minutes after she left, we were up and running.
The Ceton device works great. I have Media Center running on our HTPC as well as on my work computer in an adjacent room WIRELESSLY. The recording feature works flawlessly and I can watch recordings made by the HTPC on my work computer and vice versa. Also, I'm running Windows 8 Professional on both, not Windows 7, so Windows 8 users need not worry the Ceton won't have tuner pooling--it does!
I was also concerned about picture quality with this networked device but the quality is superb with no pixelation, even over the Wireless-N network. Highly recommend the Ceton InfiniTV 6 ETH for anyone with some tech savvy and the patience to deal with your local cable company.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2013I've been an Amazon customer for what, 15 years or so and this is the first review I've written. This is the second Ceton device I've owned, I bought the 4 channel pci version the moment it came out a couple of years ago. I was very disappointed with that but I didn't blame the company. It was new and MS Media Center and the Win OS had its issues. Now I bought the external version so I can hook up several pc's and xbox's. Well, I set everything up, made sure I had all the devices on a fast network (they all go through the same switch so there aren't any delays or hops).
Sadly, all I can say is this product is really, really bad. It looses connection to extenders all the time, I can't watch a single show without out it dumping and I have to reconnect. Sometimes it remembers where it was, sometimes not. It can never hold a channel long. I've setup up tons of recording. For every 20 shows setup up in the todo list, 1 might record (all claim they have no signal when recording time comes up but I'm occasionally watching it myself when that happens so I don't know what their issue is).
All in all, one of the worst purchases I've ever made (I even built a new PC just for this purpose so I'm out that money too). Great concept, these guys just can't pull it off. k, live and learn, I'll avoid Ceton going forward.
Oh, if you remote desktop into a PC running Media Center connected to Ceton, it will immediately drop the connection. You can't watch TV on a remote desktop (that's cool) but it will kill scheduled recordings and will generally make it unavailable to other devices while you remote desktop. fyi
Update 12/11/13: I have rebuilt the machine to bare bones, with the only thing running is the Ceton and media center. It will occasionally play live TV but most of the time either gives me a "This device is not authorized to play this content" A little later it may play it, it might not...really up to the whim of Ceton really, no real reason it does what it does. It will switch the message to "Can't find a tuner" and then back again. Doesn't record anything because when the time comes, it can't tune in. I'll run their little tool which goes out as says that the tuner is there, works great, all the channels work. Happy days. I run media center setup, it finds everything great, sets it up and then after a bit, simply goes away. My recommendation would be to avoid this product until it matures enough to work as a consumer product and does not need be operated by PH'D in computer science. You know I'll never let my mother-in-law near this thing!!!!!
