- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2013Style: Old ModelVerified PurchaseI like this product because it does exactly what it is supposed to do, and does it very well. The set-up instructions are simple, and very clear. It only took a few minutes to get it up and running. There is also a very good User's Guide on the printer software disk.
You can view that on your monitor or print it on paper, which I prefer. The guide is written in clear and non-technical language. It runs to 146 pages, so I used the duplex print feature to reduce the bulk, and that worked just fine. The duplex feature is very handy when you want to print on both sides of the paper in order to save paper, reduce the bulk of a report, or whatever other reason you have.
The machine is fast (Brother rates it at 24 pages per minute) and reasonably quiet. The print quality is excellent. When I started using it, I noticed that there was a slight tendency for the finished pages to curl at the ends. I use 20 lb. multipurpose paper, which is usually the cheapest available, and I don't know if the curling tendency would be less if you used heavier paper. However, in the on-screen print setup, there is a check box that you can check "to reduce paper curling". This feature works well. I print #10 business envelopes occasionally, and the machine does a very good job on them. It handles them differently than my old HP printer, and I suggest looking at the User Guide before you start. You can also print larger envelopes. Check the User Guide for restrictions and information about envelopes, and suggestions for the best kinds of paper to use.
Before I bought this machine, I checked Consumer Reports and the customer reviews on Amazon. I had intended to buy another HP color printer, but changed my mind after reading the horror stories in the Amazon reviews. If you can live without all the bells and whistles on an all-in-one printer, and the color, I think this is a very good choice.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2011Style: Old ModelVerified PurchaseThis is my first laser printer and so far I'm very happy with it. It prints fast and the printing is crisp and clear. I don't find it unusually loud and the size seems just right. The duplex feature is awesome!
I do have a couple of issues though. One is that I've only had this printer for 2 months and have really not printed that much on it and I've gotten a low ink notice already. I always choose to print at 300 dpi and in toner saver mode. It seems to me that the toner cartridge that came with this printer prints even less than the one I buy for my cheap inkjet printer. I knew it was really just a starter toner, but I was hoping it would last longer than this.
The main disappointment is that I just discovered I cannot use the duplex feature on "user defined" paper sizes. I like to print books using half-size pages that are 5.5 x 8.5" - there is no option to choose this paper size so I must specify it and in doing so I lose the duplex option.
***UPDATE***
After reading reviews for the toner refill I became aware of a neat feature on the printer that allows one to print a report that shows how many pages has been printed and how much toner is left. I pressed the "go" button 3 times quickly and a one-page report printed out saying I had printed 661 pages thus far and that I still have approximately 40% toner left. This little tid-bit is actually in the manual, along with other uses for the "go" button.
So I feel much better now knowing I still have plenty of life left on the toner that came with this printer. I've changed my review from 4 stars to 5. While I'm still unhappy about being unable to print duplex on custom size pages, I think for the price this is an excellent printer.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2011Style: Old ModelVerified PurchaseBought this Laser printer because I was sick of buying ink for my Lexmark Inkjet printer (which does a great job, but eats through rather expensive ink cartridges). I had an old HP laser printer many years ago, and remember how long the toner cartridges lasted, so after getting fed up with buying inkjet cartridges, I started searching for a new laser printer, and chose the Brother HL-2240D based on the reviews I read here, and of course it's price. I've had it for about a month, and now feel comfortable writing an honest review based on my experience. I do a lot of text document type printing, and that's mostly what I use this printer for. IMO it does a great job at this task. I have read varying opinions on how much printing the original toner cartridge will perform out of the box, and decided to go ahead and purchase the "High-Yield" toner cartridge along with it. I am glad I did, lol. In all fairness, the first print job I gave to my new printer was a pdf manual, that was practically all black pages, with white lettering, so this print job really can't be used as a fair bench-mark for how many pages you can normally get out of a factory supplied cartridge. (I got about 64 duplexs, front and back). IMO there is no doubt though, that the factory installed toner cartridge doesn't have a whole lot of toner compared to replacements. That said, with settings on 300 dpi, duplex, and "toner saver mode", the pages still came out great, and that's with the "white" lettering on black background, being of a rather small font to boot. Was very happy with it's performance on "low" settings :-).
Some of the things I found a little annoying were...each time I started a new print job, I had to go back into the properties screen to reset all my desired print settings. In my case, and I imagine most peoples, I preferred settings that saved toner, "300 dpi", and of course "toner saver mode". Just keep this in mind every time you start a new print job, or you will be using the default settings which will use the most toner (maybe it's just me, but I found this annoying). Another annoyance, is that the default setting for feeding the paper (paper source) is "auto select", instead of "Tray 1". I found this odd, as "auto select" required me to feed a sheet of paper manually through the front of the printer, rather than just taking from the large stack in "Tray 1", which seems to make more sense as a default selection. If someone with more experience with this printer can shed light on this, or I am missing something, please say so :-). Other than that, I love the printer, and it works great. I really didn't find the fan noise very loud at all...while printing, there is definitely some noise, but I actually find my inkjet printer to be as loud, if not louder when operating.
On a side note, as I mentioned earlier, one of the main reasons I purchased this printer was to save money on ink. I also have purchased Toner refilling kits (you will also need an inexpensive "flag gear kit" for your factory supplied original toner cartridge) that are rather cheap, and have already refilled my original factory toner cartridge, to convert it to a High Yield replacement cartridge. It was actually quite easy, and even installing the "flag gear kit" on it was simple. There are plenty of "how to" videos on UTube, and easy instructions come with these kits to make it a simple job to supply yourself with relatively cheap toner replacement cartridges yourself! You can find them with a search on Amazon here, or other places online very easily.
All in all, I am very happy with this laser printer, and would definitely recommend it. There are some reviews that are unhappy that it is not "on-board" wireless, which is true (not a concern for me), so if that is important, this printer is not for you. Size-wise, it is actually less wide than my inkjet, a little deeper, and about the same height..so although it may take up a hair more space, it's certainly not a lot more. BTW, it just printed out my tax returns in a fraction of the time it used to take my inkjet ;-). I give it a thumbs up for price, economy (especially filling your own toner cartridges), speed, and ease of use (would have gotten 5 stars if not for the minor annoyances with print preferences default settings).
