- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2011This was one of the best investments I made to upgrade my almost 3 year old Dell Inspiron. The chip is super easy to install and sped up my processing time by about 30%.
I have a Dell Inspiron 530 (regular, not the slim version) with 3 GB of Ram that I bought about 3 years ago. The PC had an old Intel Celeron, 1 core, 2.20 Ghz processor and lately I noticed that I would get a perpetual hourglass whenever I tried to run several newer programs at once. Instead of spending $500-$600 on a new computer, I decided to upgrade the processor. It was a terrific choice.
Installation was super easy (just be sure to refer to you owner's manual, which you can get online, and/or view a few YouTube videos) and my computer now runs like a champ.
Just don't forget to buy thermal grease to coat the processor and heatsink or your new Intel Duo core E8400 will overheat! I purchased Zalman ZM-STG1 Super Thermal Grease from Amazon.com and it worked like a charm. Also, be sure not to throw out your old heatsink/fan because the one that comes with the Intel Processor might not fit your motherboard. It didn't fit mine because it uses push-pin type clamps instead of screws. My Dell motherboard required 4 screws so I just reused the one I had (after applying some thermal grease) and it worked just fine. My new Intel E8400 CPU idles at 35C and spikes no higher than 47C at full load, which is perfect.
Just note - after installing the Intel Duo Core E8400, you might have to reboot your computer twice. On the 2nd try, my PC worked fine and I immediately noticed how much faster I could accomplish my tasks. And my Windows experience scores jumped too. My processor speed went from a 4.3 rating to 5.6, my memory rating went from 4.9 to 5.9, and my primary hard disk went from 5.1 to 5.9.
I love this Duo Core processor!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2009Great Core 2 duo, installation a bit rough but everything came out fine.
the installation was easy as for the processor it self, but when i tried to put the heat sink on it (mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard )and push those four things over the mother board i thought i was going to break the mobo or the processor, but do not panic nothing will break, its normal to need alot of strength, before using screws and placing the mobo on the case, just gently hold the sides of the hole as close as you can and push the heat through each of hole (don't be shy.. push that thing hard and steady until you see it come through) and then you will be all set.
things that i don't mention that are obvious, make sure you dont have any static while working and ensambling the computer, use thermal grease between the processor and the heat sink, and before doing anything read carefully the installation manual.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2008Pro: with "El cheapo" stock cooler I hit 4ghz easy with the asus P5E-VM HDMI.
I had a Q6600 B3, this is equally fast at stock... and OC...
Cons: In case you didnt know.. this procesors (E8xxx in general) have some serious problem with the temp sensor.... Temp reading is insane... my said 15c and I know for a fact that its not true... my room temp is 35c (I live in nicaragua) si its imposible for a procesor been cooler than 35c... core temp are 50c and 55c.. and thats also wrong... acording to some expert the best program to read the real temp is: Real Temp 2.41
Core temp, everest, speed fan and bios didnt read the real temp of this procesor in my motherboard or any motherboard for that matter....
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2011I upgraded my HP MediaSmart EX495 with this processor. I've had no issues with overheating at all. The stock heat sink is still being used and my system is now running WHS 2011. Things are running great. I did put 4 GB of ram in it as well. I've really enjoyed the speed improvement with this processor. Things are so snappy now. I use Air Video and Splashtop on my WHS and with this new processor things have been running very well. I've notice big improvements in streaming content with Air Video, and Splashtop gives me a higher frame rate then what I had before. I'll always recommend Intel processors over AMD because Intel's run faster even when the AMD equivalent has the same clock speed. In a lot of cases the Intels run hotter than the AMDs, but in my experience it's been the opposite. When it comes down to price, the AMD processors will always be less expensive, but that's for a reason. I feel that Intel will always be a few steps ahead of AMD.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020Great for soho builds I.e. thin clients or a NAS where I wouldn’t get this to play modern title games you could games from the era it (processor) came out in.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2012I own a Acer x1700 desk top. Came with an E1400 2GHZ CPU. Installed the E8400 chip and OC threw the FSB to 3.3 GHZ. My windows experience for processor moved from 5 to 6.4. I payed 59.00 dollars used. It was a great deal. I also installed a Zotac gt520 GPU card. Not the new one but the older one with 4 caps. It can take the OC CPU were the new gt520 would crash and memory dump after about 30 min of game play. Gaming graphics in windows experience moved from 5.3 to 6.4. Memory index moved from 5 to 6.4. Not bad for a 20.00 dollar graphics card. Acer has a Bios the wont let the owner change any voltage settings. NVIDA offers a driver download 6.08 that will let you OC CPU threw the FSB. OC the GPU to core 1050 shader 2110 memory clock 800. Removed side panel and use a 9" home fan for extra cooling. Play Dragon age 2 on high settings at 1680x1050. GPU ZOTAC ZT-50603-10L.
