- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2022So I ended getting this game used for a very low price and it works flawlessly on my Series X. While the cellophane on the case has a hole in it on the back, the case is in better shape than I expected for a $8.31 used copy. Got here about a day later than expected. As a veteran of the Ace Combat series since Ace Combat 04, I can say this is a good game but not as good in some aspects compared to 04, 5, 0 and 7. First what’s great, this maybe one of the best games in the series when it comes to gameplay mechanics. ESM was introduced in this game first, it was partially added in 7 but you only really got to use it in 7s multiplayer and SP mission 1. Here it’s a very helpful mechanic which boosts your missile tracking, lock on speed and reload speed. This is also the first game to introduce high-g turns. High-g turns are very useful for turning around faster but it bleeds airspeed. The enemies in this game especially the Ace squadron that you fight multiple times throughout the campaign are very aggressive and fast. This was the last game to have the wingman command window which is more limited in this game with only “cover” and “attack”. But you can now use your other Allie’s in the mission to your advantage. You can order your Allie’s to attack enemies in front of you by holding down up on the D-pad and cover by holding down down on the D-pad where they attack enemies that are attacking you, which includes both aircraft and anti-air vehicles on the ground. Every enemy that’s destroyed by you, your wingman and your Allie’s add to your score unlike in previous games where only those destroyed by you and your wingman count. Whereas other Allie’s kills don’t count towards your score. This is nice and is very effective and efficient which can help make up for a poor weapon load out or if your low on ammo.
Now the parts that aren’t so great. The story is your typical Ace Combat story. The story itself is okay, not as good as previous or future games but is passible. This is the shortest campaign in the series with only 15 missions however the missions are much longer in duration due to the battles being much larger in scale. It’s a target rich environment. Some parts of the dialogue make no sense, in one mission your ordered to retreat and the Ace Squadron you fight throughout the campaign attack. Despite being told to retreat, the return line vanishes forcing you to fight them in what is self defense. Then in the story you get punished for this. Which is really stupid, it’s not like in 5 where the characters were framed.
The boss fight in mission 13 is the most poorly balanced boss in the entire series which says a lot. Normally the bosses are one of the best parts of this series. But this one was not done well.
This concludes my review of Ace Combat 6. It’s a good but flawed game. Definitely recommend if you haven’t played it yet.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2010ok to begin with i bought ace cobat zero then 5 and now six. five has about fifty planes wich rocks and the storyline was good. zero has the aces and better graphics and some cooler looking planes than five. but six... well it doesn't have a lot of planes (about seventeen or so) but it does have aces that put up a struggle. and ace combat six definetely has the graphics and style to keep the franchise going. but it seems like the storyline is where they really Failed. i know how everyone says the storylines in five and six were lame but i liked them, but this one... well i would have preffered flying missions just because your ordered to over the weak storyline this one has. i can't really explain it but the storyline mostly follows you (the pilot) your wife and an officer of the enemy country who was once a pilot and was grounded because of an injury. the overall and annoying saying in AC6 is "dance with the angels" yeah it gets annoying because everyone says it a lot. anyway enough ranting. the gameplay looks good, the planes fly well, and there is enough missions. each mission may have around 4 or so areas to pay attention to. with you having to help ground forces spread over vast mountain ranges or seaside beches, fight off enemy planes, shoot down UAV's, and avoid missiles being fired from outside the battlefield, all at once. and on top of that this ace combat has the A-10 so it's practically a winner in my book. hey the A-10 is for close air support and i believe we should try to make sure that as many troops as possible make it home. yes even in a video game its great, not fast (top speed just over 400) but hey with fuel/air bombs and about the biggest machine gun you can find on any 1 pilot aircraft (30mm firing larger than normal 30mm rounds).
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2010Ace Combat 6
I've played PC-based flight simulators as well as arcade-flight shooters in the past. I started off with Microprose's line of games, including F-19, F-117, Jane's more realistic simulators such as F-15 Strike Eagle, and the more recent shooters like Ace Combat 2 and Tom Clancy's HAWX. Ace Combat 6 has all of the elements of previous Ace Combat and HAWX games. It is a far cry from a simulator and was never intended to fit this role. Ace Combat has always been about fun. That means putting afterburners and air-to-air missiles on an A-10, although this time they have toned it down a bit and left off the afterburners on the A-10. Ace Combat 2's "super" plane was something that came out of Macross, but Ace Combat 6 does not fail to impress with some of its weaponry and gameplay action. You have the opportunity to fly into tunnels to clear them of targets, as well as fly into a Death Star-like trench, and into the barrel of a big electromagnetic rail gun to take it out. After having been a "veteran" of Xbox gaming for only 2 months, I no longer doubt the capabilities of the controller. With practice, flying the plane is not difficult at all including the use of minor adjustments to keep the craft from smashing into walls in the tunnels.
Ace Combat 6 tries desperately to tell a story and includes cut scenes. Unfortunately, after watching most of the cutscenes, I didn't care for the story, characters, dialogue, or voice acting. The story is essentially rubbish, and the characters keep on using the phrase, "dance with the angels" from being an insult, to a salutation, to a war cry.
All you need to know is kill all enemy targets. The targets marked in RED with "TGT" are more important than the targets that appear as GREEN on the radar map. Yep, you read that right. Enemy targets that are marked green. I am not sure if they were trying for a Blue Force Tracking color scheme but it works out horribly. If that isn't bad enough, most maps are extremely target rich. It is difficult to select the target you want out of a dozen that appear in front of you. Normally games that allow you to auto select a target will allow you to default into picking the closest target. Not so with Ace Combat 6. I found it automatically picking targets that were beyond missile range even though I had 2 tanks/SAMs about 2000 feet in front of me.
Sometimes the missions suddenly change, so don't always believe the briefings when they say it is mostly ground targets. Towards the end (there are 15 missions total), expect a lot of air to air combat after the mission is done.
The game is frustrating at times because you're not always sure where to go since you are busy dealing with bad guys that are shooting at you. The flying fortresses and the final boss require numerous targets to be destroyed in order to take them out. It makes more sense to just drop a really big bomb (like a bunker buster, fuel air bomb, or anything) to blow them up. But instead, you have to shoot out engines, cooling towers, or a myriad of other things.
If you've played Hawx or previous Ace Combat games, you won't miss much by skipping Ace Combat 6. The menu system and game interface looks like someone forgot to put any effort into them, and there is a lot of dialogue that probably wasn't translated correctly.
Overall: 4/5 stars
