Product Description
It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two founders decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015Not as well built as the ones made in England. Did not fit as well, inside was a foam stuff and not leather. Bad Quality. Wore out quickly. Will not buy again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2006First pair of Doc Martens for me and probably not the last. Extra toe room and a solid feel under foot. Great value too as I would compare with many priced at $100 plus.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2007These shoes were a steal at around $40. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I'm hoping Amazon gets more of these so I can order another pair. It would be cool to get a black grizzly of them as well, not sure if they make this though.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2007I have very very very wide feet. And flat, too. So much so that I only buy Doc Martens because they are one of the only casual shoes I've found that fit comfortably. Not that all DM shoes fit me - they don't. Some are very narrow. But not these... Usually I look for a shoe that reminds me of a Frankenstein's monster type of shoe. You know, one that has a very big square toe, but these don't look bad. They just look like a boat shoe. So great props from me. After I write this review, I think I'll buy another pair. My pair from a couple years ago is getting a little worn.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2006These are the first Dr. Martens that I have owned and I have to say that they seem like great shoes. I have only worn them a couple of times so far, but they are truely comfortable, even after standing and walking all day. They also seem really solidly built and the leather is thick and soft. I expect them to last for many years. The fact that they were a great price is a bonus! With the 20 off 80 amazon special and an additional 20 off coupon... you can figure the price. And they were already more than 50% off before that. These shoes seem a good deal even at their regular price though. I highly recommend them.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2006It's a good buy if you like the style.
My daughter (5) didn't like it because the shoes looks too "fat"
Bottom line:
It's made with good quality and comfortable.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2007The shoes are very nice looking. They are true to size. They are great and comfortable.
