Product Description

Amazon.com

Stored in their black, hardwood block, the five stainless-steel kitchen knives in this set fulfill a cook's needs and also look great with their stylish stainless-steel handles poking out. Along with the knives comes an 8-inch sharpening steel for keeping their edges aligned. The knives are stamped from high-carbon stainless steel and their stainless-steel handles are shaped to snugly fit the hand. The five kitchen knives in the set include an 8-inch chef's knife for rocking through chopping tasks, an 8-inch slicing knife for carving meats and poultry, a 6-inch utility knife for making sandwiches and myriad other jobs, a 6-inch boning knife with a narrow blade for cutting around bones and fileting, and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife for fruits and vegetables. All the knives are dishwasher-safe, but hand washing protects the edges better. --Fred Brack

I bought these knives about 1 month ago, and initially loved them. They were a great set for the price -- the knives were very sharp and sturdy. Just this past week, however, I noticed that a couple of the knives had developed rust! Obviously, this shouldn't be happening to high-carbon stainless steel knives. I will be sending these back!

I really really like thses knives. I think they look nice and they are very sharp. I'm certain they are not as good as knives that would cost, say $200 or $300, but that does not mean that they are not good knives. They do their job well and are worth the price. I've had not problem with rusting or misalignment or anything like that.

I was initially very excited at the prospect of getting such a classy looking set of knives for so little. Then, they arrived in my mailbox.
Seeing them myself, I found them to look cheap. the blades weren't alligned properly, the handles felt awkward and hollow, and furthermore, I couldn't get them sharpened. I even got a different sharpening stone than what was included with the set and gave that a try. no luck. the entire piece felt loosely contructed, as though it would fall apart if I wasn't careful.
I did, however, get a couple of knives for Christmas. I got an OXO good grips chef's knife and two wusthoffs. I found these knives to be far superior and although I know that they are expensive, but they are exceptional. (also got shining reviews in Chef's magazine.) Some of the finest kitchen tools that I own.
I'm getting rid of my Sabatier Prosteel set.

The knives have heavy, metal handles, not particularly easy to grip when wet, and not well balanced. The stamped Chinese blades feel cheap, and seem rather prone to bending. They don't hold an edge well, but the thin metal is easily re-sharpened.
They do look nice sitting on the counter, but anyone who does any serious cooking will want to spend a little more, and buy something more substantial.

If you have roommates, but also cook, you know the stress of having "nice" equipment. These knives are perfect for such a situation! These light weight stamped blades are cut out from a thin sheet of steel which makes them very, very light. All of the weight is in the stainless steel / polymer sandwich handle (to stick the stamped blade into). Weight is a major factor when buying a knife. A forged knife will offer better overall balance / control than a stamped knife. These just feel cheap.
They do look ok from a distance - but your are better off to get one good forged knife then a whole set of these cheap stamped knives.

We were attracted to this set by the price. They are fine looking, and meet my expectations on performance. I always hand wash, so not using the dishwasher is not a problem. They are sharp, a nice fit in the hand, and even cut through frozen items. Was sorry set did not include a bread knife, but over all it is a very inclusive set, with most sizes needed. I have had the set for over a month, and truly enjoy using them. We are very pleased.
